MCGM has pr oposed t o execut e the “ Work of augmen tation of c apacity of main pump a tGoregaon pumping s tation” . Ther e are 2 nos. of 10MGD c apacity Kirlosk ar mak e pump sinstalled in the dr y well of the pumping s tation, driv en b y 135 HP 3-phase slip ring Inductionmotors respectiv ely.
However both of 10MGD c apacity pump s are requir ed to be oper ated continuously due t ohigh le vels. If an y one of the 10MGD c apacity pump g oes in br eakdown, the se wage levels inthe se wer ne twork r emains in sur char ge condition. T o avoid such a lead time and t o keeptwo pump s of 10 MGD c apacity in oper ation BMC decided it is necessar y to ha ve 10 MGDcapacity pump as a s tandb y.
During the r eplacemen t of pump se t the main bot tleneck w as the isola tion as the pumpingstation is in oper ation r ound the clock. Simult aneously BMC had undert aken the w ork ofsuction side pens tock g ate overhauling. BMC in formed us tha t only f ew hour s of isola tionwould be pr ovided and ask ed us t o plan the w ork acc ordingly . We disman tled the old pumpset and piping up t o suction and deliv ery valves and t ook isola tion only t o replace thesuction v alve, NR V and deliv ery valve. Also w e extended e xisting C.I. deliv ery header of900mm during the isola tion.

The said job completed in 2 Shut downs as described below.
Shut Down 1 – For Replacement of Sluice valve
This one was challenging as we had to complete this job within half and hourduring which the water level in wet well lowers. Once the water level rises,there is no isolation to stop the water flow.
Although we had installed one no. 5 HP pump to dewater as a safety.
This job included Removal of old valve & Installation of new valve.
Shut down 2 – For Dismantling & Removal of old pump
We had to isolate the Delivery header of 700mm dia Pipe from the pump,where the delivery sluice valve was not working. We decided to block thedelivery pipelines at the well end and then blocked the pump connections withthe header with the help of blind flange.
