Love Grove Pumping Station
Objective/Background
The Love Grove pumping station project in Worli where sewage from satellite pumping station is collected and the pumped deep into the sea. This project was one of the most important projects for VEMPL as this project kickstarted the long and fruitful association between MCGM and VEMPL.
The Love Grove pumping station, Worli is one of the largest sewage pumping station of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) with an installed capacity of 86,400 M3 / Hour capacity (8 pumps each having capacity of 10800 M3/ Hour). Currently, 1400mm Dia sluice valves are installed at the suction side of these positive suction pumps. Out of these 8 suction valves, 3 valves were not closing properly and were causing heavy leakage. As with all the installations that are at least 25 years old, the pumps and accessories were not function in at full efficiency due to regular wear and tear. The MCGM approached VEMPL to assist with the problem.

Approach
After understanding the problem, VEMPL suggested that the best course of action to take would be to replace 1400mm Dia sluice valves and rising spindle gate valves.

VEMPL’s role a solution provider during the project was to deliver timely and permanent solutions. The said solution of replacing the old valves with new customized valves would ensure long life and completely stop leakage making the job of keeping the city clean, much easier. With VEMPL’s expertise, the valves were replaced in record time once they were supplied at the site. Automatically operated suction valve was synchronized with the pump control switch gears.

Challenges
When one is talking about a city like Mumbai and the sewage management, the challenge is already huge. Additionally, as there was no positive isolations available from the suction tank it was difficult to dismantle the existing valves.
The weight of the valves posed a difficult challenge. Each valve weighs around 10 MT and no lifting arrangement on the site for dismantling and erecting the valves made work a little difficult. However, VEMPL worked around the challenges and delivered the project in record time.

Outcomes MCGM was impressed with the solution and the rate at which VEMPL delivered the entire project. 3 valves that were replaced are functioning as designed and the client has not faced any issue since installation.

Not just Love Grove, MCGM has since approached VEMPL to assist with other projects spread across Mumbai with various other requirements.
